Conclusion to this work
|
After a century and a half of development the personnel of the New Zealand Army are the inheritors of an enviable tradition; valiant duty faithfully done. It is a tradition that all New Zealanders share and indeed it is one of the binding traditions of our society.
While it is impossible to predict the future for the Army, it can be stated that it will change. Indeed, one of the constants of its history is continual change. Another constant appears to be the forgetfulness of the nation. In time of crisis support is overwhelming, in time of peace it is grudgingly given. As the nature of the world has tended to be the lurch from crisis to crisis, it would have perhaps made more sense to have constant rather than fluctuating support for the nation's ground forces.
If the country is to guarantee its own defence in an insecure world, then it will have to support national security in the same way it provides for social security. Without a secure sovereign state there tends to be no other securities for a nations citizens. |
